Cellphone is the Most Incredible Camera, Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography Winner Says in the Open Lecture

The Pulitzer Prize for feature photography winner admire cellphone is the “most incredible camera,”aPulitzerPrize-winningphotojournalist saidto start a visual storytelling in his openin alecture in at Hong Kong Baptist University yesterdaymorning.

 

“I think within ten 10 years, or maybe even five years, a Pulitzer Prize will be won by a picture that comes out of a cellphone,” Josh Haner said.,“Tthis is better than the first digital camera that we ever used in The New York Times and you have one in your pocket.”

Haner is a staff photographer and the senior editor for photo technology at The New York Times,and he won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for a photo essay documenting the arduous recovery of a Boston Marathon bombing victim.

 

He gaveanthe open lecturein HKBU about “short term and long term visual storytelling” yesterday asonepart of the a week-long series of Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop events. More than and over 80 people took part in this attended his speech.

 

In the open lecture, Josh Haner showedpeople his different types of short term and long term photo story assignments finished in a period from within five5minutes to over four4years.

 

Beyond the finish line, TthePulitzer Prize-winning photo essay, was finished in 22 days over three3months, Haner said..During most of the photo shooting time, Jeff Bauman, the Boston Marathon bombing victimrunnerwho lost his legs in the eventbombing, wanted to “kick” JoshHaner“offthe project, he said,”and refused to show his emotional side in front of the camera.

 

 

“The really important part of being a photojournalist is knowing when to step away and when to give people their privacy,” Josh Hanersaid.,“Wwe can’t take everything and we need to be respectful.”

 

 

Josh neverdoes not take photos when he was on vacation or during his free time. “I feel like when I take pictures I was am working,” Josh added,.“When you make your passion into your career, it creates some problems.” 

 

 

“Photojournalist is not somebody who just knowshow to press the shutter,” Li Xinyi, a journalism student from Chongqing University, said.,“Ssometime photos are more powerful than words and what we now should do is not just learn how to be a good photographer but how to be a good photojournalist first. Josh’s speech really inspired me a lot.”
